Most people know 8-ball — but did you know there are dozens of other pool table games? Many of them are perfect for kids, beginners, and mixed-skill family groups. Here are some of our favorites.
1. Cutthroat Pool (3 Players)
Best for: 3 players of any skill level
Each player is assigned a group of 5 balls (1–5, 6–10, or 11–15). Your goal is to pocket your opponents’ balls while keeping your own on the table. The last player with at least one ball remaining wins.
Why kids love it: Three players means everyone plays at once — no sitting out. There’s always suspense as balls start disappearing.
2. Rotation (61 Points)
Best for: All ages and skill levels
Players must always shoot the lowest-numbered ball on the table first. If that ball or any other goes in, they score those points. The first to 61 points wins.
Why families love it: The rotation rule makes the game fair for beginners — you always know exactly which ball you’re supposed to be shooting.
3. 9-Ball
Best for: Slightly older kids (10+) and adults
Only balls 1–9 are used. Players must always hit the lowest ball first. The player who pockets the 9-ball wins — but it can be legally pocketed at any time. Games are short (5–10 minutes) and exciting, making it perfect for mini tournaments.
4. Bank Pool
Best for: Intermediate and advanced players
You can only pocket balls by banking them off a rail first. This game forces players to think about angles and geometry — a great way to develop real billiards skills in a fun, competitive format.
5. Straight Pool (14.1 Continuous)
Best for: Serious players of any age
Players call their shots (pocket and ball) before each attempt. Only successfully made called shots count. Play continues until a set point total is reached. This is the classic competitive pool game and requires both shot-making and strategic thinking.
Tips for Playing Pool with Young Children
- Use shorter cues. RACK sells 36–48 inch cues perfect for younger players.
- Start with mini tables. They’re sized for smaller arms and make hitting balls much easier for beginners.
- Play games that don’t require calling shots. This removes pressure and keeps the game moving.
- Focus on fun over rules. For the youngest players, just hitting balls around the table is enough!
