A quality pool table is built to last — but only if you take care of it. The good news is that pool table maintenance is simple and takes just a few minutes every week. Follow these tips and your table will play like new for years to come.
1. Brush the Felt Regularly
Felt collects chalk dust, debris, and pet hair over time, affecting ball roll. Use a soft-bristle pool table brush and always brush in one direction (end to end). Never brush in circles or back-and-forth — this mats the fibers. Brush after every few sessions.
2. Keep Food and Drinks Off the Table
Even a small spill can permanently stain and warp the felt. Designate a side table for drinks and teach everyone this rule from day one. If a spill does happen, blot (don’t rub) immediately with a clean dry cloth and let it air dry completely.
3. Protect the Felt From Sunlight
Prolonged sun exposure fades and weakens pool table felt. If your table is near a window, use curtains or blinds during peak sun hours, consider UV-blocking window film, and use a table cover when the table isn’t in use.
4. Use a Table Cover
A good pool table cover protects the felt from dust, pet hair, and accidental damage. Make it a habit to cover the table whenever it’s not in use — it’s one of the best investments you can make for long-term care.
5. Re-Level the Table Periodically
Over time, especially if the table is moved or the floor settles, your table may gradually fall out of level. Check the level every few months using a bubble level across the width, length, and both diagonals. Adjust the leg levelers as needed.
6. Check and Replace Cushion Rubber
Over many years, rubber cushions dry out and harden, making balls bounce unpredictably. Signs your cushions need attention:
- Balls die immediately after hitting the rail instead of rebounding
- Bounce feels inconsistent across different rails
- Visible cracking or hardening on the rubber

7. Clean the Balls Regularly
Pool balls collect chalk and hand oils over time, causing inconsistent roll and soiling the felt faster. Wipe balls down with a damp cloth after each session. For a deep clean, use a dedicated ball cleaner or a small amount of dish soap and warm water. Always dry completely before playing.
8. Keep Pets Off the Table
Pet claws cause snags and tears that can ruin a playing surface quickly. Keep the table covered and the room door closed when unsupervised.
9. Store Cues Properly
Always store cue sticks vertically in a cue rack or horizontally in a case — never leaning diagonally against a wall. Diagonal storage causes warping, which makes accurate shooting nearly impossible.
